Topic of the Month

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) has long been recognised as a critical business skill, but its significance is only increasing in the era of AI. As more tasks become automated, the ability to connect, empathise, and build relationships is becoming a key differentiator. According to HR Magazine, a holistic approach must be taken by organisations to identify the specific stages in the employee lifecycle that can be improved by the infusion of EI skills. HR Magazine also reports that 72% of managers consider emotional capabilities among the top five essential leadership skills. Despite this, half report a lack of organisational support in developing these competencies.

Emotional Intelligence is far from just a ‘soft skill’ – it has a measurable impact on business performance. According to research reported by hrnews a 10% increase in a manager’s EI score correlates with a 7% rise in overall business performance, including profitability. Additionally, a study from the University of Essex highlights how emotional awareness influences financial decision-making differently across genders, offering valuable insights into the role of EI in business strategy.

A crucial aspect of EI is consistency – Emotional Intelligence should be displayed across all interactions, not just selective moments. Unempathetic leadership styles, such as a “Jekyll & Hyde” approach in which leaders “make up” for past indiscretions by “doing good” later, according to a fascinating HBR article by Xu et al, only serve to reduce trust between the organisation and individual. This erratic, contradictory behaviour has significant knock-on effects, from a reduced willingness to collaborate to unpredictable staff turnover due to burnout.

EI’s influence extends beyond the workplace – we can even see its impact in popular culture! Business Insider highlighted the Apple TV show Ted Lasso as a great example of how Emotional Intelligence can be a leadership superpower. In the article, consulting leader Gerald Leonard discusses how the leadership style of the titular Lasso emphasises the “importance of kindness, understanding, and building authentic connections.” It isn’t just about being nice, though! Lasso also approaches the world with curiosity and seeks to understand before reacting to situations.

Elevation Learning's Perspective

We believe Emotional Intelligence is more important now than ever. The rise of AI and automation of many aspects of consulting work means human connection has become the true competitive advantage. If everyone has access to the same AI technology, it’s important to have the ability to connect with and understand others.

We have put together two articles this month discussing why Emotional Intelligence is a key skill for consultants, as well as how you can assess and enhance your level of EI.

Interestingly, it can be difficult to ensure EI training reaches the right people. Elevation Learning’s Sophia Kalpaka-Hopkins, shared some fascinating insights during our latest Elevation Learning Spotlight. Sometimes, those most in need of EI development are the least likely to seek it, so it can be helpful to shift the focus onto the tangible business and career benefits to emphasise EI’s widespread positive impact on professional success.

The truth is, we are already in the age of Emotional Intelligence. Research from TalentSmart revealed that Emotional Intelligence is already the #1 predictor of job performance. For consultants yet to invest in EI training, it could be one of the most valuable career moves you make!

Model of the Month

Feedback Models

Every month, we’ll share a Model of the Month in our LinkedIn posts and articles to help you elevate your consulting toolkit. This month, we’re focusing on feedback models – two powerful frameworks that’ll boost your ability to give feedback in a constructive and emotionally-intelligent way.

It can be a real challenge to strike the balance between clear, actionable, and well-received feedback. The COIN and BOOST models offer practical, structured approaches to ensure your feedback drives improvement while fostering engagement and collaboration.

🪙 COIN Model

The COIN model provides a structured approach for delivering objective and solution-oriented feedback:

  1. Context – set the scene: when and where the behaviour occurred.
  2. Observation – describe the specific behaviour objectively. No subjective interpretations.
  3. Impact – explain how the behaviour affected you, the team, the client, or the project.
  4. Next Steps – suggest actions for improvement.

In practice, this could look like:

During yesterday’s project progress review meeting (Context), I noticed that you frequently checked your phone (Observation). This gave me the impression that you were disengaged, and your meeting input was lower than usual (Impact). Moving forward, please avoid non-essential phone use during meetings, and communicate to me when it is essential, to demonstrate active participation (Next Steps).”

Consulting News & Insights

Starting salaries stagnate – new starters in the consulting industry might be looking at a longer road to reach their desired income level, with salaries failing to grow over the last year. Multiple potential reasons have been cited across the industry, from demand fluctuations post-Covid to the rise of generative AI and remote work. Find out more in Consultancy.uk’s exploration of undergrad salaries.

‘US landscape’ leads to consulting policy change – Accenture, which employs almost 800,000 people worldwide is one example of the consulting industry moving away from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as a policy. In 2017, Accenture set targets for DEI metrics, including gender and ethnic minority representation, but the ‘sunsetting’ process has begun, and the firm will no longer submit data to diversity surveys. Find out more in the Financial Times’ report.

BCG expands London office to support in-person work – Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has expanded its main London office to supports its strategic emphasis on in-person working and growth plans in the UK. The expansion includes redesigned spaces featuring plants and a café-style working area to entice employees back to the office. This initiative aligns with a broader trend of companies increasing office space post-pandemic and, like PwC, adopting a stricter return-to-work policy. Find out more in the Financial Times’ report.

Mentorship to bridge leadership gaps – experts highlight the critical role of professional mentoring in enhancing productivity within British businesses. The Chartered Management Institute attributes 50% of the UK’s productivity gap with the USA to poor management practices, suggesting that structured mentoring programmes could address this issue. Find out more in The Sunday Times’ report.

Executive coaching gains traction among elite managers – executive coaching has become an essential asset for elite managers and C-suite leaders in the UK. High-profile executives, such as Jeff Bezos and Eric Schmidt, have utilised coaching to enhance their leadership skills. Find out more in The Sunday Times’ report.
